Can Dogs Eat Corn?

Corn kernels are safe; corn cobs are extremely dangerous.

Use caution when feeding dogs corn

Every dog is different. Individual allergies and sensitivities are common — always introduce new foods in small amounts and watch for adverse reactions. This site is for informational purposes only and is not veterinary advice. Always consult your vet.

The Full Picture

Plain corn kernels (off the cob) are safe for dogs and are a common ingredient in many commercial dog foods. Corn provides carbohydrates, protein, fibre, and antioxidants. However, corn on the cob is extremely dangerous — dogs can and do swallow chunks of cob, which cannot be digested and can cause life-threatening intestinal blockage requiring emergency surgery. Never give a dog a corn cob. Popped corn (plain, without butter or salt) is also safe in small amounts.

What You Should Know

While corn is not outright toxic, there are important precautions to bear in mind before sharing it with your dog. Portion size matters, and certain preparations or varieties may be unsafe. If your dog has any existing health conditions, check with your vet first.
