The Full Picture
Sardines are one of the best fish for dogs. They are rich in omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA), protein, coenzyme Q10, calcium, and vitamins D and B12. Because sardines are small and short-lived, they accumulate very little mercury compared to larger fish like tuna. Tinned sardines in water (not oil or brine) are the most convenient option. Fresh sardines should be cooked and bones checked. One or two sardines a few times a week is plenty for most dogs.
What You Should Know
Sardines is generally considered safe for dogs to eat. As with any treat, moderation is key — it should complement a balanced diet rather than replace regular dog food. If your dog has never tried sardines before, start with a small portion and keep an eye out for any unusual reactions.
